The Federal and Estate Gift Tax law is currently in a temporary “expanded mode. Between now and the end of 2012, everyone can transfer up to $5,120,000 in assets from their estate without paying a gift tax. The same holds true for those dying in 2012. Under current law, this opportunity will end on January 1, 2013, and the tax-free transfer will drop to $1,000,000. Don’t miss this important estate planning opportunity.
